3 Day Wet Season Kakadu and Katherine 4WD Safari


Day 1 (L,D)

You will be collected from your Darwin accommodation at 7.30am for your 3 day 4WD tour to Kakadu and Katherine.

 We head south along the Stuart highway and into Fog Dam Conservation Reserve. These wetlands have international significance because of their beauty and natural ecosystems. A great variety of fauna can be found here throughout the year as well as a large variety of birdlife.

After a comfort stop at the Bark Hut, we make our way into World Heritage listed Kakadu National park. KakaduKakadu rock art- Top End camping safari is the largest national park in Australia, has some of the world’s finest rock art and a varietyof habitats, including floodplains and savannah woodlands.

Once within the park, our first stop is Ubirr where we walk through galleries of ancient aboriginal rock art, whichyour guide will interpret. Also learn about bushtuckers and bush medicines before reaching the top of the plateau, where you can relax and enjoy the spectacular view over the floodplains and the Arnhemland escarpment. 

A picnic lunch will beserved on the banks of the East Alligator River. 

Then we head to the centre of the park and to the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre for an insight into the cultural heritage of the park. 

Late this afternoon, board the sunset Yellow Waters wetlands cruise. Yellow Waters billabong is located at the end of Jim Jim Creek, a tributary of the South Alligator River. This is the largest river system in Kakadu and contains extensive wetlands, including river channels, floodplains and backwater swamps. About one third of Australia's bird species are represented in Kakadu National Park, with at least 60 species found in these wetlands. There are also plenty of crocodiles in their natural habitat, and buffalo on the floodplains.

After the cruise, we make our way to our accommodation. 

Overnight accommodation - Lakeview Park, Bush Bungalows  

Day 2 (B,L,D)

After breakfast we make our way to the Bowali visitors information centre for a look around.

Then to the Nourlangie area and we view the birdlife at AnbanKakadu tours for children- Nourlangie Rockgbang billabong before continuing to Nourlangie Rock, an ancient Aboriginal shelter, where we will explore the area and the rock art. Your guide will lead you on an interpretive walk around the site.

We have lunch at Maguk (Barramundi Gorge and falls) and then we take a walk through the paperbark forest to reach the gorge, where we can have a refreshing swim in the plungepool.

Mid- afternoon, we depart Kakadu via the southern entrance, for the township of Katherine.

 

Overnight accommodation – 1 bedroom cabin at Nitmiluk Gorge

Day 3 (B,L)

We start tGunlom waterfall- Kakadu Tours for kidsoday with a cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge, home to 13 spectacular gorges, carved outof the rock by torrential summer rains, over millions of years. We cruise for 2 hours viewing the beautiful scenery and discovering the customs of the traditional owners, the Jawoyn people.

After the cruise we take part in a hands on cultural experience at the Katherine Art Gallery. Activities on offer include traditional hunting activities such asfirelighting, spear and boomerang throwing as well as making your own painting, to take home with you as a souvenir. 

**Please note that the Katherine Art Gallery is closed during January so alternative activities will be offered during this time ** 

Then we drive to the Katherine Hot Springs, where we have lunch and we can enjoy a soothing dip in the thermal pools or sit and relax under the small waterfall.  Mid afternoon, we leave Katherine to head north again on our drive back to Darwin. We call in at historic Adelaide River en-route.

When this happens, Ubirr will be replaced by Nanguluwur art site and we'll visit another lovely Kakadu waterfall.
